On the Recent Actions of the 2020/2024 United Methodist General Conference

Hopeland Church believes that the recent actions by the denomination's General Conference have moved significantly away from Christian teaching and the Christian calling, to say nothing of its Methodist heritage through our founder John Wesley.

Hopeland Church is not aligned with the General Conference and its decisions. You can read more about Hopeland's disagreements with the denomination's leadership HERE.

To describe what Hopeland Church does believe and teaches, continue reading.

God's Love and Salvation

At Hopeland, we believe in the boundless love of God for the world. As John 3:16-17 teaches us, "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him."

The Holy Trinity

We believe and teach that there is one God, eternally existing in three persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. These three are all co-equal and co-eternal, each fully God, united in essence while distinct in person and role - the definition handed to us from centuries of Church history.

Jesus Christ's Sacrifice and Resurrection

We believe that we are saved through Jesus Christ's sacrifice for us. As 1 John 2:2 states, "He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world." We also believe in His bodily resurrection as stated in the oldest creeds of the Church, as Jesus said to Thomas in John 20:27, "Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.”

Salvation Through Faith

We hold that belief in the Lord Jesus Christ is necessary for salvation. Romans 10:9-10 teaches, "That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved."

The Holy Spirit's Guidance

We believe in the guidance of the Holy Spirit in our lives. As Romans 8:13-14 says, "For if you live according to the sinful nature, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live, because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God."

The Holy Spirit and Biblical Authority

We affirm the authority of the Bible. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 teaches, "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work."

John 16:13 teaches, "But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come." Because we believe God only speaks truth, we teach that God's word is infallible and does not err.

Sin and Redemption

We acknowledge the tragic consequences of sin, as Isaiah 59:1-2 describes: "Surely the arm of the LORD is not too short to save, nor his ear too dull to hear. But your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden his face from you, so that he will not hear."

However, we also celebrate God's redemptive power through Christ's righteousness alone. As Romans 5:8 affirms, "But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us."

Discipleship and Worship

We are committed to living as Christ's disciples and seeking God in our worship. As Jesus said in John 4:23-24, "Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth."

God's Design for Relationships

We celebrate God's design for singleness, marriage, and family, as outlined in Matthew 19:4-6: "'Haven’t you read,' he replied, 'that at the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female,’ and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh’? So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate.'"

Our Mission in the World

We serve as Christ's representatives in the world, as stated in 2 Corinthians 5:20-21: "We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God. God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God."

Christ's Return

We look forward to and prepare for the return of Jesus Christ, as He promised in Revelation 22:12, "Behold, I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to everyone according to what he has done."
